Ascoli Piceno è una delle città più belle e monumentali d'Italia: il suo centro storico è interamente costruito in travertino(un tipo di marmo ricavato dalle cave vicine), e ha come fulcro la suggestiva Piazza del Popolo, detta anche il Salotto d' Italia, in stile rinascimentale. La piazza accoglie i monumenti più importanti della città come il Palazzo dei Capitani con accanto lo storico Caffè Meletti, la chiesa di San Francesco con l'edicola di Lazzaro Morelli, la loggia dei Mercanti e nelle sue immediate vicinanze il Teatro Ventidio Basso. Altro fulcro cittadino è il suggestivo spazio urbano di Piazza Arringo, la più antica piazza di Ascoli, dove si eleva la Cattedrale di Sant'Emidio che ha sul fianco destro la Porta della Musa e al di sotto della navata principale la Cripta dedicata anch'essa al patrono della città, il medievale Battistero San Giovanni, il Palazzo dell'Arengo, sede dell'importante Pinacoteca Civica ed il Palazzo Vescovile. Nelle immediate vicinanze si trova anche Palazzo Bonaparte e seguendo, dalla piazza, il percorso che risale verso il Colle dell'Annunziata la Chiesa di San Gregorio Magno. Non solo piazze, ma anche suggestive strade e vicoli di impronta schiettamente medievale caratterizzano il suggestivo centro storico di Ascoli Piceno come via Pretoriana, via di Solestà, via delle Stelle, via Soderini e Corso Mazzini, la principale arteria cittadina. Tra gli altri monumenti degni di nota sono da citare: la chiesa dei Santi Vincenzo e Anastasio, in Piazza Ventidio Basso, dalla bella facciata suddivisa in riquadri, poi il Ponte Romano (o ponte di Solestà), uno dei pochi, in Italia, visitabili anche al suo interno, presso l'omonima Porta Solestà, Porta Gemina, le vicine rovine del teatro romano e la Chiesa di San Tommaso Apostolo, Porta Tufilla, la Fortezza Pia e Forte Malatesta, la chiesa di Sant'Agostino, il Palazzetto Longobardo, la Torre degli Ercolani, una delle poche torri superstiti tra le decine che compaiono nelle cronache medioevali, in ricordo delle quali, come per San Gimignano, Ascoli ha il soprannome di città delle Cento Torri. Meritevoli di essere visti sono anche i templi dedicati al Santo Patrono quali: Sant'Emidio alle Grotte e Sant'Emidio Rosso. Nelle vicinanze della città, percorrendo la Salaria in direzione Roma, c'è anche il monumentale Albero del Piccioni e nella zona di Porta Cartara il complesso, restaurato di recente, della Cartiera Papale; poco distante da qui, la rocca di Castel Trosino, antichissimo insediamento longobardo a strapiombo sul torrente Castellano, in cui alla fine del XIX secolo venne rinvenuta uno delle più ricche necropoli d’Italia, i cui preziosi reperti sono ora sparsi in diversi musei in tutto il mondo. Suggestive e da menzionare sono infine le Grotte dell'Annunziata, ciclopica costruzione del periodo romano.
Nel serrato reticolo di strade del centro storico che ancora ripetono l'antico tracciato romano, piazza del Popolo si apre improvvisa con la sua composta simmetria, mirabilmente conclusa nella sua definizione architettonica e spaziale.
Di forma rettangolare, pavimentata in grandi lastre di travertino, è cinta su tre lati da bei palazzetti rinascimentali (1507 - 09) , aperti da bassi, ritmici portici e coronati in gran parte da un'elegante merlatura. 
Il loro sviluppo regolare è interrotto, nel lato Ovest, dal massiccio palazzo del Popolo, risalente al Duecento, rimaneggiato da Cola dell'Amatrice e successivamente, simbolo del fiero spirito della città che solo nel '500, dopo  lunghe lotte con il potere papale, rinunciò alla propria indipendenza; sulla fronte lo adorna un grande portale e sull'altro spicca la bella torre originaria dalla cuspide poligonale.
Chiude la piazza sul lato Nord il bellissimo fianco della gotica chiesa di San Francesco (1262 - 1371), che si eleva alto e schietto come una fortezza,  tutto percorso da forti costoloni che lo serrano più fitti là dove si incurvano le absidi a raggiera e il cui slancio si prolunga nei due esili e spogli campaniletti pentagonali, simili a torri di vedetta.La severità medioevale della costruzione, tutta di caldo travertino, si contrappone alla grazia degli edifici minori  che su di essa convergono  prospetticamente, esaltandone il vigore e la tensione plastica.
La piazza, isolata dal traffico, è luogo di incontro degli Ascolani che nelle ore del passeggio la trasformano in una sorta di palcoscenico su cui si dipana, pittoresca e vivace, la vita dell'intera città.
Imponente e spettacolare è il fianco della chiesa di san Francesco con i costoloni che ne serrano l'abside e il gotico portale laterale, sormontato dal cinquecentesco monumento a Giulio II.La fuga dei portici su tozze colonne che fiancheggiano  piazza del Popolo ad Ascoli Piceno.
